Give Your Eyes a Break: Prevent Digital Eye Strain
Prevent digital eye strain with simple daily habits, a comfortable workspace, and proper screen settings to help keep your eyes healthy and comfortable.
1. Practice Healthy Eye-Rest Habits
- Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds to help relax your eyes.
- Blink More Often: Remember to blink fully and regularly while using screens to keep your eyes moist and help prevent dryness.
- Use Lubricating Eye Drops: Consider over-the-counter artificial tears to relieve dry eyes, following the product instructions or your eye care professional’s advice.
- Take Longer Breaks: Step away from digital screens for at least 15 minutes every two hours to give your eyes a chance to rest.
2. Optimize Your Workspace for Eye Comfort
- Position Your Screen Properly: Keep your screen about an arm’s length away (around 20–28 inches) and slightly below eye level.
- Adjust Your Lighting: Use comfortable ambient lighting and avoid glare from windows or overhead lights.
- Reduce Screen Glare: Position your monitor to minimize reflections and adjust its brightness to match your surroundings.
- Maintain Good Posture: Sit comfortably with your back supported, shoulders relaxed, and screen positioned to avoid straining your neck and eyes.
3. Adjust Device Settings
- Increase Text Size and Contrast: Adjust your font size and screen contrast to make text easier to read without squinting.
- Enable Night Mode: Use your device’s night mode or warm display settings in the evening for a more comfortable viewing experience. Remember that blue-light filters have not been proven to prevent eye strain.
- Give Your Eyes a Break from Contact Lenses: If you wear contact lenses and experience dryness during long screen sessions, consider switching to your prescription glasses to help improve comfort.
